ancestors were not that lazy and practiced various games to temper the bodies

about <b>Gyulash & Kokh</b> which seem
to be 'brothers' of wrestling. It is not surprising that Armenian wrestlers
almost always succeed in the World or Europe Championships or Olympic Games. Here
wins the player who makes his rival touch the ground with his back. Traditionally,
during the wedding ceremonies the parents of the bridegroom used to hold a kind
of Kokh before the young couple. The purpose of such a false fighting is to
show the obedience of the father-in- law. At present some remnants of this
extraordinary custom can be found in the villages of Kotayq, Ashtarak, Ararat, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Armenian young <b>Lakhtakhagh (Club Game)</b>
was of great popularity. 2-20 young men gather in a field, draw a broad circle
and get divided in two groups. One of the groups, insiders, steps inside of the
circle and the other group called outsiders stands around the circle. Each of
the insiders has a lakht near his feet and is to protect it by all means. The
outsiders use all the possible means for snatching the lakht. Mockery, blows
and pushes are normal during this game.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 27.0pt;">

has never occurred to me that <b>Ksanmek (Twenty-One)</b>
is an old Armenian game. Fortunately, this is one of few folk games which are
still played almost everywhere in Armenia, though with certain modifications.
According to the number of the players, several equal groups are formed. The
members of the first group throw up the ball with one foot for 21, then 51, and
at last 101 times. Meanwhile the foot with which the player throws up the ball
shall not touch the ground. Every section of the game is called palan. The
player shall touch the ball exactly 21, or 51, or 101 times, otherwise the
points are 'burnt'.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 27.0pt;">

besides Ksanmek there are 3 other survivors of Armenian games which are widely
spread especially in villages- Banka Plav (The Can Crumbled), 7 Qar (7 Stones),
and Holl. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 27.0pt;">

on the ground. Then a straight line is drawn 10 meters away from the can. One
of the players stands near the can, while the others stay out of the line and
throw their lepuks (flat stones) at the can trying to 'ruin' it. The aim of the
insider is not to let the outsiders take away their lepuks and always keep the
can upright. The insider can trace the outsiders up to the line, as it is his
territory. In case of catching an outsider the latter substitutes the insider.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;"><b>Bazaar
Blot</b> is a 32-card trick-taking game derived from the French popular card game
Belote the rules of which were first published in 1921. Games closely related
to French Belote are played throughout the world. Thus, in Bulgaria it is known
as <b>Bridge-Belote</b>, in Greece –<b>Vida</b>, in Cyprus – <b>Pilotta</b>, in Croatia-<b>Bela</b>, in
Saudi Arabia – <b>Baloot</b>, in the Republic of Macedonia –<b>Belyot</b>. The lion part of these
games have almost the same rules, yet Bazaar Blot played only in Armenia, and
Baloot played in Saudi Arabia are slightly different.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">Actually,
the name of the card game itself, Bazaar Blot, already suggests certain
resemblance between the game and an Oriental market. This resemblance is
manifested in the noise and bids made by the players. Unlike the other versions
of Belote, during Bazaar Blot players make bids, saying ‘<i>Diamonds-10</i> ’,
‘<i>Spades-9</i>’, etc., i.e. the player who says ‘<i>Hearts-15</i>’ should get more than 150
points to win the trick, otherwise his team loses. The number of tricks is not
limited, but the number of points for the winning of the game is <b>301</b> exactly.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">Amazingly,
this card game has its own ‘word stock’ which comprises such words as <b>‘terz’
</b>(perhaps derived from a French word ‘tierce’), ‘<b>quansh</b>’ (I don’t believe),
‘<b>kapuyt</b>’ (probably derived from a French word ‘capote’ that has become
pronounced ‘kapuyt’ (blue in Armenian) during decades), etc.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

only words of Blot are quite special, but the general atmosphere during the
tricks and Armenian men’s attitude towards the game as well. Under no
circumstances can Blot be considered merely a card game, since for 'the
experts' of this famous game it is a ritual that should be performed almost always
in the same way. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">First of all, the ritual requires a comfortable place
frequently outdoors, with a table and at least 4 chairs. The ritual without
spectators is nothing, that's why the crowd gathered near the players watches
the tricks, often upset, rarely amazed, and tries to be of any help prompting
this or that player. <i><b>Gradually, the play does become a bazaar where
everyone speaks but says nothing and everyone listens but hears nothing.</b></i></span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">On
the one hand, Bazaar Blot is a leisure activity called to entertain people. On
the other hand, it is a craft requiring attention, intellect and good memory
for card counting during the tricks.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #134f5c;"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">Frankly,
Bazaar Blot might be labeled as an ‘obsession’ but never as a gambling, because
the Armenians don’t play it for money. </span><span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 150%;">In case of this game, several bottles of beer
or a treat including delicious Armenian barbecue can be at stake. Of course,
the winners don’t take the beer won and go home; or the barbecue is not tasted
by the winners only. On the contrary, play can be developed into a feast which
all the players and spectators will take part in.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt; line-height: 150%;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Blot may be presented as an embodiment of our nation’s nature. It is played by clever
